Coal comes to Connecticut!!

My pack has a new foster brother, Coal, and boy is he one sweetheart. He's a gentle spirited guy who LOVES walking outdoors on a leash and running with other dogs. He also loves tennis balls and we are teaching him to catch and fetch. He now can catch nicely from about 3 feet away and he seems so proud of himself!

He is timid and shy.... loud noises and sudden movements frighten him. He acts just like a dog who has been abused…

Snowed in, cold and incommunicato in New England

While I was flying back from Honduras from my annual volunteer humanitarian trip, the northeast was wholloped with tons of wet snow on the trees already heavy with leaves. I made it safely to DRC headquarters courtesy of Jeanine and Jacquie who were lovely hostesses, however I missed my doodles and drove on up to CT yesterday, where the local Bradley International Airport had a total of 20 1/2 inches of heavy wet snow. The land line phones and cellular phones are not working, was well as…

Starting to feed my dogs RAW

I've been learning and reading about feeding our dogs natural foods such as meat and fish. I've been wanting to at least supplement our current grain free kibble with more protein and perhaps switch to all RAW diet. Last week I fed the boys chicken livers and poor Seamus had terrible diarrhea. Since then I've conversed with Andrea Johnson who is a wonderful resource for RAW diet and nutrition.

Last evening I started again by giving each of the 3 doodles a raw chicken thigh. At first…

Today we are priviledged to be able to help save "Harry" from euthanization in a southern VA animal shelter. Three days ago DRC was contacted by an independent rescuer in VA who regularly visits the high kill shelters and helps pull adoptable dogs for rescue groups. This shelter is at their maximum capacity and need to start euthanizing dogs for space. Harry was one of the dogs who would probably be the first to be put down. Harry is a happy 1 yr old chocolate labradoodle (Very Labby!) who…

Rory and Harley are two sweet first generation doodles who were in a kill shelter in eastern Oregon when Doodle Rescue Collective was asked to help. They had been surrendered by their owners when Harley's owner died and Rory's owner moved out of state and dumped him at the shelter. Because they were owner surrendered, they would have been among the next group of dogs to be euthanized for space. The dog warden begged us to take Harley once she knew we could find a pilot to save Rory. Being a…

Sometimes it's good to hear the wonderful things we are all doing as a group and this is one of those stories. Last Thursday we were contacted by the rescue coordinator of a large city animal control facility in North Carolina. They had three young male doodles who were relinquished by a puppy mill and they needed rehabilitation to help them recover from the trauma of the puppy mill in which they had been born and raised. They need socialization to people and life outside the mill. They need…

The Purpose of the eyes of a 6 year old

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year-old).

"Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish

Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their

little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping

for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we

couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia

procedure for the old dog in their…

Picking up Casper

Yesterday (Sunday) afternoon I accompanied Jacquie and a DRC volunteer to pick up Casper at his owner's home. He is a 2 1/2 yr old boisterous tall (approx 24in at shoulders) white 70lb ALD whose family decided the best thing for him would be to find him a home that could better meet his needs. He is a dominant personalitied boy and still needs to learn some people manners. We walked into the home with the Mom crying and holding him back on a leash and gentle leader collar while he barked at us… Continue

DRC will be on CBS Early Show 6/9/10

DRC has been asked to participate in the CBS Early Show at 8:30am EST tomorrow! They will be celebrating the beauty of mixed breed dogs to coincide with the AKC allowing mixed breed dogs to participate in events such as agility but not beauty. They will have a small "beauty contest" of the local adoptable rescue dogs and the commentators will try to identify their breed mixes.
