So Yankee Doodle has been with his new family about 10 days now. Yankee's new mom, Wanda, and I are friends on facebook and I've greatly enjoyed reading her posts about Yankee, seeing the pictures, and emailing back and forth about various things (I love keeping up with my fosters like that!). This morning Wanda posted a statement that has just stayed with me all day, and who but my beloved DRC family could understand why this resonated so strongly with me!

i'm so proud of my Yankee, it only took him 2 meals to learn to sit calmly and wait for his food...he's so smart.

Now, I'm totally impressed that Wanda has Yankee sitting for his meals. That boy is a chow hound and I know the effort that must have taken both of them. And I agree...Yankee is really, really smart! But - that's not what got to me. It was the word "my". Just two letters. Wanda very easily could have just said "I'm so proud of Yankee..." and everyone would still know of her pride in his accomplishments. By the "my" conveys the love and affection that she has for this boy who, just a couple of months ago, was an abandoned mess wandering around in rural Alabama. I'm sure Wanda still has frustrations with Yankee - he's a largely untrained puppy and is just always into stuff. However - for her these are just part and parcel to overall good that is Yankee. I appreciate and honor Wanda for letting herself fall so readily in love with!!
