Twinkle Tails

Twinkle (a.k.a. Miley) is quickly shedding fear for fun!  We wouldn't have believed it, but our Christmas trip to Alabama was a major turning point.  While there we took multiple walks each day and were greeted by neighborhood children frequently.  Given her past experiences with children we feared to worst, but these kids were so respectful of her that she opened right up for them.  She started responding regularly to "Come", which she had been taught before the trip but you couldn't tell…

1-2-3 dogs

Having recently adopted Shadow (and now updated my profile pic here to include him), we have adjusted quickly, or I should say, he has adjusted quickly to us. Even with my pet sitting 2 other dogs since we got him, he seems quite at home. My daughter says he is just so happy to be living with a sweet babe like Ginger, the prettiest dog in the world, all the boys are jealous.

We are "babysitting" Sam, Ginger's long-time "boyfriend," a beautiful golden retriever. Although the boys get…

Meet BISCUIT, formerly Sea Biscuit, our easiest foster ever and read his "finding his forever home" story

Meet Biscuit, formerly Sea Biscuit!

We were asked to foster Sea Biscuit the week before Thanksgiving.  He was being rehomed due to family health issues.  Being the responsible family they were, they contacted DRC to arrange for him to be rehomed and didn't just dump him at the local shelter.  We made…

Shadow's day at the park

Shadow seemed a little restless yesterday, so I took him to the dog park nearby. Ginger usually just sits on the bench, so I left her home with hubby to rest. I wasn't expecting many people at the park, and I was first. Shadow and I walked around, he sniffed but didn't go anywhere except back to the gate. He stuck his nose through the space, definitely seemed to want out. I put him back on the leash for a walk around the park, was chatting with a gentleman with a cocker spaniel,…

We didn't know how Alfie was with other dogs, so I took him to our dog park this morning and HE WAS FINE.  We stayed for over an hour and he played with 4 other dogs.  He was submissive to all of them and had a good run with the pack! Now he can go to a furever home with another dog!

Problem Solved!

Dugan no longer jumps the fence!!! I got an estaimate on a new fence, one tall enough to keep him in was not in my budget, so I purchased a Radio Fence and it works like a charm, in fact I believe Dugan was trained for this type of fence by his previous owner because he knew exactly what to do in regards to avoiding the flags! He hasn't left the yard since I turned on the transmitter! Dugan is such a magnificent dog, I just can't imagine why anyone would give him up. We are so lucky to have…

Meet Norman!

Meet our new foster dog, Norman!

I picked up Norman from a local shelter on Friday. He was found under a house early last week & as soon as my friend Doris saw his picture up on the shelter's Facebook page on Thursday, she called me. She had fostered another doodle earlier…

Meet Cash aka the man in black

This gorgeous guy was rescued from a shelter in Ohio yesterday with a big help from Ann Kendig. Buddy Cash has had a pretty rough start to life, after living in a horrible home (more than likely abused) and then abandoned in a shelter for a month he is finally getting the love and attention he deserves.…

Alfie needs a forever home

We have had beautiful  Alfie for 1 week.  Poor Alfie was living with a family for around 6 months who gave him up because they had 3 small children, then he went to a senior couple who did not have the energy for a young Doodle.  Then poor Alfie was stuck in a terrible shelter who didn't put him on Petfinder for 3 weeks. We he first came to our home, he was frantically tryng to escape..  Of course, while here he has been neutered and is up to date on all his shots.  He is a 65 pound young…

2 doods = LOL

We've had Shadow for 2 weeks now, and although Ginger has never been so tired, I think she has never had so much fun. With all the puppy play, Ginger's fur was getting just crusty with doggie saliva (Shadow's). I decided to give her a spa day, and took her to the groomer yesterday. They bathed, fluffed and pampered her and gave her a cute holiday bandana. Shadow couldn't stay away from her when we got back, sniffing and nuzzling.

This morning, the dogs discovered an old game Gin used…

what kind of dog....?

We've all heard it, haven't we? After nearly five years of walking Ginger throughout my neighborhood, most people now recognize her as a golden doodle (or at least some kind of poodle mix), and no longer ask the question. Now as more and more people meet Shadow, it starts all over again! Shadow outweighs Ginger by 20 pounds and stands 5 inches taller, and with his short hair, and he's mostly black....."what kind of dog IS that?" A GOLDEN DOODLE? REALLY? (no, i'm lying, and I just want to…

Shadow's obsession

When I brought Shadow home, I knew he had an eye for Ginger, all the boys do, and for days they would rough and tumble play quite a bit. That seems to be settling now (could he be tired of her already?), but I had no idea how much he would take to our pet turtles. It seems very odd to me; we have a spa-size tub on the back patio with 2 Red Slider water turtles (9 years old) about the size of small snack plates. Since the weather here in Florida is so beautiful this time of year, our back…

Doggie tantrums

oh my, as I sit here Ginger took the primo spot under my desk. Shadow laid down to my right and tucked his head/nose in Ginger's "armpit" (between her front and rear legs) and on my foot. Both are dozing now (baby snores).

I am happy to say they are getting along great, no "arguments" between them much anymore, lots of rough-housing and tail wagging, respectful side by side meals with no attempt to steal food from one another. Shadow has chewed through his leash, once I think by…

Shadow's new doo.... : 0)

Added by Susan Harms on December 8, 2011 at 4:28pm — 6 Comments

My boy can jump the fence! I was hoping he wouldn't be able to but this morning I let him out and when I went to let him back in, he was across the street in the neighbors yard I called for him, he came running and leaped effortlessly back into the yard ! I was just sick! The fence I have is about  4 ft high. Anyone have any suggestions other get a new fence???

Adopting Shadow

Tomorrow, our adoption of Shadow will be finalized. I am happy to say he seems to be very happy in his new environment, loves meeting all our neighbors and their dogs, loves having Ginger for company, and does not chase kitty. Initially he seemed to be nervous around bicycles (BARK BARK BARK), which is troublesome. My husband is a bike rider, and we have lots of kids who play on all kinds of wheels (we live in a cul de sac with a closed gate entryway) all up and down the street. Shadow is a…
