We are very happy to announce the release of the new Petfinder search! The search itself is much faster, the pet data updates much faster, and it has some cool new features, too.

Best of all it fixes some big problems that we’ve had for a while. Just wait until you see how fast your pets are updated into the search.

While we are very proud and excited, we know its not perfect and we are continuing to work to try and get it to be the best it can be. Below are some of the issues that we know about, and are working on, but if you notice anything else not working properly please let us know:

•Can’t select multiple for age or gender. PBT-397
•Searching a partial pet name does not bring back accurate results. PBT-470
•”See All breeds” is also listing breeds with no results. PBT-415
•Location does not accept state names, only state abbreviations. PBT-487
•Searching by breed does not search through a pet’s secondary breed. PBT-530
•”Search For Animal Welfare Groups by State” does not allow allow user to specify a specific state. PBT-548 (was PBT-543 and PBT-574)
•Pet list sorting does not work. PBT-554
•Photos are temporarily not appearing. PBT-558
•Some user locations are not being recognized.  Please clear your cache to resolve this issue. PBT-559
•Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 8 users complain of “LOADING RESULTS” message not going away and pets never loading. PBT-586
•”ANIMAL ID” field is not appearing in the pet notes’ “more about” area. PBT-588

Failed Photo Updates

This is an intermittent issue affecting all Petfinder members.

April 5, 2013 at 10:50 AM ET -
Photos are successfully uploaded to the system, however, the updated photo is not displayed to the public. In some cases, the new photo appears but reverts to the old image. In other cases, the photo changes may take days appear. Your photos are not being lost. They are stored in our system. Repeated attempts to make photo changes in order to get them appear will not improve the situation. If your photo changes are not taking place, please submit the Petfinder PET ID(s) to

We will work to resolve your photo problem and it may help us identify the root cause.

Pet list scrollers are out of sync.

This issue affects all Petfinder members that use the pet list scroller.

August 23, 2013 at 12:30 AM ET -
We have experienced repeated intermittent issues with our admin side pet database servers not syncing with our public search/pet list servers for the pet list scroller. When you upload or edit a pet in your admin account, the pet’s information and photos are successfully uploading into system. However, due to a failure in our sync system, the updates are not displayed on the public side pet list scrollers for a extended period of time. We are very sorry for the inconvenience, and are working around the clock to get this issue resolved as soon as possible.

October 11, 2013 at 6:00 PM ET -
The cause of this issue has been identified. We are in the process of deploying a large scale fix that should prevent this issue from continuing to happen.  In the meantime, we try to manually sync the pets in your admin account with the pet list scrollers at least once a day.

The last successful sync was done on October 8 at 1:50 PM ET.  Any updates that were made before that time should now be appearing in the pet list scrollers.

Inquiries improperly being sent to Private/Internal email of pet Location instead of being sent to email of Contact.

This issue affects all Petfinder members.

October 4, 2013 at 6:17 PM ET -
When an inquiry is sent from a pet’s public profile by clicking on the “Adopt Me” or “Contact this Organization” button, the inquiry is sent to the email listed in the “Internal Use Only” section of the location set for the pet. It should go to the email listed in the entry that’s selected from the “Contact Person” field.

We are investigating this issue to find the cause of it.

Pet statistics stopped displaying/recording upon new search release.

This issue affects all Petfinder members.

October 4, 2013 at 6:20 PM ET -
Normally, viewing a pet’s profile will be counted as a view for the pet. Due to this issue all statistics have stopped at October 1, 2013.

We are investigating this issue to find the cause of it.

Some imported photos not appearing on pet listings.

This issue affects all Petfinder members using the automatic import feature.

October 4, 2013 at 1:55 PM ET -
Members using our automatic import feature reported photos not appearing on pet listings. This issue only happens for groups using the automatic import feature. It happens regardless of the photos are sent, either through a URL in the data file or FTP uploads.

Dear Petfinder members,

Many of you have been struggling with technical issues on Petfinder and we want to address our full
membership to reach out to those we have heard from as well as those we have not.

Petfinder has had two technical failures in the past week that have changed the service we provide to you and the animals we are helping you get adopted. These issues have caused difficulty managing adoptable pet listings in the Petfinder administration system and in making those pets available to Petfinder visitors in a timely fashion. We are taking these issues very seriously and working to fix them as quickly as possible.

At the current time, and until further notice, we are only able to update adoptable pets listed on
Petfinder once every 24 hours. This is due to a failure in the search technology that we currently use,
which we are working with the manufacturer to resolve. We are also investigating an issue related to
serving the photos of adoptable pets listed on Petfinder. This is not a universal problem, and is caused
by a failure to refresh some images cached in our serving infrastructure by an external partner. We are working with them to fix this also.

It is because of several historic failures like this that the Petfinder Technology team has been
completely replacing our core technology infrastructure over the last 18 months. We have been deploying a more modern and robust infrastructure that has been resolving a great number of these problems. Continuing that, in the very near future we will be entirely replacing the search technology we have just had a failure in to offer a new, reliable and much better Petfinder search experience.

The Shelter Outreach team will be announcing this launch shortly in June.

In the meantime, we are manually updating the listings on Petfinder once a day, so please look for
updates within that timeframe until we can resolve these issues.  You do not need to redo any changes already made to your pet list, they will appear on their own during these updates.

I apologize that this causes you and your teams difficulties, and it is the utmost priority to the entire
Petfinder team to fix these issues so we can continue to try to find good homes for every one of the
animals in your care. I want to assure you that we have deployed all possible resources to these fixes
and that we have committed to providing the best possible service to you and your platform for
responsible pet adoption.

The Shelter Outreach team, under Sara Kent, will update you on these issues, and the Technical Helpdesk, under Charles Saunders, will continue to respond to any technical problems you are having with Petfinder.

We will be publishing updates here on a daily basis.

PRESS RELEASE:  July 15, 2013, 3:05 p.m. ET

Nestle Purina completes acquisition of Petfinder

ST. LOUIS, July 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Nestle Purina PetCare Company today announced it has completed the acquisition of Petfinder, the largest online pet adoption website, from Discovery Communications. This is Nestle's first major acquisition of a digital property, and it follows Nestle Purina's announcement June 5 that it had signed a Purchase agreement to buy Petfinder. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Through a network of almost 14,000 animal welfare associations and pet shelters, Petfinder links people looking for a pet with hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs seeking a new home, and has facilitated more than 22 million adoptions since its founding in 1996. The acquisition complements Nestle Purina's existing business by supporting the Company's long-standing commitment to pet welfare organizations and its mission of building better lives for pets and the people who love them.

"Petfinder is an outstanding organization that is fully aligned with Nestle Purina's belief that pets and people are better together and our commitment to promoting responsible pet ownership," says Joe Sivewright, President, North American Pet Food, Nestle Purina PetCare Company. "We are thrilled with the opportunity to combine forces -- enhancing Petfinder's solid framework with our extensive nutritional expertise and vast knowledge of pet welfare."

The Petfinder website reaches a large and engaged audience of animal lovers and pet owners across the U.S., Canada and Mexico, achieving more than 100 million visits each year. Nestle Purina aims to enrich and add value for Petfinder's pet-loving visitors and shelter partners, while the online space offers the company a digital and mobile platform to engage with a growing group of highly involved pet consumers and shelters.

The Petfinder business now will report through the Purina Corporate Strategic Brand Team, which is located at Nestle Purina Headquarters in St. Louis.

Dear Petfinder members,

Petfinder has released a new adoptable-pet search.  Our members (YOU!) are getting the first sneak peek of the new search of your adoptable pet listings.

I have been sharing the plans for our upcoming search launch with you for the past several months, not only to improve public engagement with your adoptable animals, but also to resolve technology issues with our old search platform.

During this time, as you might have experienced, we have had significant problems with our
current search platform, which may have caused your pets to not appear in our search results as fast as they should.  Given these issues, we are going to launch the new Petfinder search earlier than initially planned -

What is changing?

The most significant change we are making is to our search platform (the back-end tool that connects the pets you enter with adopters).   You will see changes to the main site and to your pets that appear in searches.  Searching for pets will be faster, photos will be bigger and pet profiles clearer in both search results and on pet profile pages.

You will NOT see any changes to your Petfinder administration system as this
work is all behind-the-scenes.

What will be fixed?

We have rebuilt the new search tool to work better with the Admin System where you input and upload pets for adoption.  The new search lives in the cloud, using best-in-class modern technology and is therefore more reliable, and simpler to maintain and operate, enabling our developers to add new features and functionality.

In short, listing and updating Petfinder with new pets will happen more reliably and efficiently.

What do you need to do?

The Petfinder Admin System will be moving from physical servers to
servers in the cloud.  A move to the cloud will make it easier to
maintain the servers that power Petfinder, aiding in a faster user
experience and less downtime.  As a safeguard to your pets, we are
going to take the Admin System offline to avoid anyone getting lost in
the transition.

Please continue to check our Help Pages to stay up-to-date on our maintenance as we build a better, stronger Petfinder.

Thank you for your understanding.

If you run into any errors or issues, please report them to our Help Team by clicking Submit Feedback
at the top of the page. We truly value your relationship with Petfinder very highly, and it is an honor to help your pets find homes.

We know that our current technology has at times made your lives more difficult, and so our developers have been working around the clock to fix the current technical issues while simultaneously building this new search.

I am very excited for you to be the very first to see this project -- several months in the making -
- and share your experience. We really hope you like it.

Thank you for all you do for the animals,

What a nightmare. Leave it to a huge multinational corporation to screw things up .

Do you think it will ever get 'fixed' without changing the current terms of use?

Now our landing page Petfinder petscroller is showing our Happy Tales!

Woohoo it's fixed! Now if it would only let you post our dogs up adoption lol

Are there any updates on when the dogs can be posted again?
